The Dangers of Ozone-Generating Air Filters

In the quest for cleaner indoor air, many individuals turn to air purifiers to create a healthier living environment. Ozone:

Unfortunately, this process affects oxygen molecules (O2), breaking them apart and forming single oxygen atoms (O). These single oxygen atoms then attach to other oxygen molecules (O2), creating ozone (O3).  So, while ozone serves a crucial function up in the sky, its presence at ground level, especially indoors, can have serious effects on human health, making it crucial to avoid ozone-generating air purifiers. 

Short vs Long Term Health Effects:

Short-term exposure to ozone can result in immediate health effects, including irritation of the respiratory system. Symptoms such as coughing, throat irritation, chest discomfort, and shortness of breath may manifest, particularly in individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma. These symptoms can be particularly distressing and may prompt individuals to seek medical attention. Additionally, ozone exposure can intensify allergies and respiratory infections, further compromising respiratory function.

Long-term exposure to ozone poses more severe health risks, such as chronic respiratory conditions and irreversible lung damage. In general, ozone is produced through various methods, including the use of high-energy UV-C lights in air conditioning systems or air purifiers employing electrostatic air filtration, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), or plasma for air purification. While these technologies aim to improve indoor air quality by eliminating contaminants, they may inadvertently generate ozone as a byproduct, contributing to potential health risks associated with ozone exposure. As such, it is essential for consumers to prioritize air purification methods that minimize or eliminate ozone production to safeguard respiratory health and well-being.

Manufacturer Claims vs. Reality:

While some manufacturers claim that their air purifiers only produce small quantities of ozone, the impact of constant exposure, even in small amounts, can be severe. Consumers need to be cautious and research if an air purifier produces ozone before purchasing to ensure that they do not jeopardize the health of their loved ones and themselves. The EPA warns consumers to not fall for false advertising and to be aware of the danger associated with these products. Some of these vendors will falsely claim that their product has been approved by federal agencies. However, no federal agency would approve these devices for use within occupied spaces due to the dangerous impact they cause on individuals' health. Furthermore, they warn individuals not to get confused by EPA numbers on the packaging of these products. They stated, “Several brands of ozone generators have EPA establishment numbers on their packaging. This number helps EPA identify the specific facility that produces the product. The display of this number does not imply EPA endorsement or suggest in any way that EPA has found the product to be either safe or effective.”  Additionally, they often utilize false terminology such as “energized oxygen” and “pure air” to mislead consumers into believing that ozone is creating a healthier breathing environment when it is doing the opposite. Through various studies, it was found that these generators do not cleanse the air but instead worsen the air quality in the room/building.
